Gamecocks Blank Blazers In Monday’s Friendy Action

JACKSONVILLE – After a crash-course week of training, the Jacksonville State soccer team putGamecocks Blank Blazers In Monday's Friendy Action together an all-around performance in the first of two exhibition outings with a blanking of in-state foe UAB on Monday evening at the Jax State Soccer Complex.

The Gamecocks tallied the lone goal of the friendly midway through the third 30-minute period. Transfer Melissa Kuya Strobel recorded the goal with a shot in front of the Blazers’ goal. The Gamecocks’ defensive performance impressed second-year head coach Sean Fraser.

“It was obviously good to get the shutout and I thought we really defended well,” said head coach Sean Fraser. “The girls have had a crash-course this past week on how we want to play and I thought we delivered on that today.”

Fraser and staff have blended in a large group of newcomers to the program and saw bright spots from that component.
“I thought the settled in really well and I thought we got a lot of them on the field and we still have some to get on the field. We are pleased with all the players that contributed today,” added Fraser.

Jax State will look to build off the first exhibition outing with another week of training sessions to prepare for the Bulldogs of Samford on Sunday evening. The match will start at 6 p.m. at the Jax State Soccer Complex.

“It will be another good test and that is what we wanted in the preseason,” mentioned Fraser. We want to replicate what we will see in our conference and non-conference schedule. Samford has a great coaching staff, so we will rest and recover and get started working toward that match.”

Following the second friendly, the Gamecocks will officially open the 2024 season on August 15 against West Georgia.

Admission is free to all Jax State home matches.
