Jax State Scrimmages to Wrap up Week 2 of Camp
JACKSONVILLE-The Red and White went head-to-head Saturday morning to wrap up its second week of fall camp.
An intrasquad scrimmage gave coach Rich Rodriguez and his staff a chance to look at the team in some game-like situations throughout the morning. There was also an officiating crew on hand to get some early work in and give Jax State another set of coaching points.
The chance to play a “game” was exciting for the Gamecocks; the perfect way for this group to spend a Saturday morning.
“I think they like playing, they give great effort, they’re a good group to be around and they’re very conscientious,” said Rodriguez of the 2024 Gamecocks. “I do think it’s a group that loves football and likes being part of the program.”
The passion showed through during the session that challenged both sides of the ball with certain situations, field positions, and personnel groups. All three phases of the game had highlights throughout the session with the defense coming through in some key situations early on and on a few third down situations.
“We have an active group of guys,” said Rodriguez of the defense. “We’re not the biggest team but we’re fairly athletic and we’re still learning.”
The offense showed some big play ability as well as some depth which Rodriguez was pleased with.
“Right now it’s a lot of good competition so I feel good where we’re at two weeks in,” said Rodriguez.
Junior tight end Jacob Barrick caught a touchdown during the scrimmage as did fellow tight end Sean Brown.
“We came out hitting, had a good time and got to run our offense and got better today,” said Barrick. “It really brought the real game of football out.”
Cornerback Geimere Latimer loved the chance to compete and was well aware the 2024 season opener was just 19 days away.
“It definitely gets you amped up and the game-like situation gives you that butterfly feeling that you can’t beat,” said Latimer.
