Garrett Wins CUSA’s Setter of the Week in Week One

CUSAJACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State’s senior setter Ellie Garrett has gotten off to an amazing start to the 2024 season. Her three performances in the Gamecock Classic earned her the Conference USA’s Setter of the Week.

Garrett was one of four players from across the conference to be honored after the first week of the volleyball season. New Mexico State’s outside hitter Starr Williams won the offensive player of the week, UTEP’s middle blocker Kaya Weaver won defensive player of the week, and Louisiana Tech’s middle blocker Rori Gray won freshman of the week.

Garrett opened the Gamecock Classic with 42 assists in the three-set victory over Arkansas – Pine Bluff on Aug. 30. She added two kills and four digs in the match. Game two against New Orleans on Aug. 30 saw more of the same stellar play from Garrett. She tallied 40 assists, seven digs, three kills, and two service aces in the sweep over the Privateers.

Saturday, Aug. 31, was Garrett’s best effort of the entire weekend. In the four-set win over West Georgia, Garrett had 48 assists, 11 digs, and three kills. She finished the weekend with 130 total assists for an average of 13 assists per set, 22 digs on 2.20 digs per set, eight total kills, two service aces, and three block assists.

Garrett and the Gamecocks will carry the momentum from the opening weekend of the season into the Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Invitational this weekend. Jax State will take on Texas Southern at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sep. 6, to start the tournament. The Gamecocks will then face the hosting Islanders at 5 p.m. on Sep. 6, before closing the tournament with a match up against North Florida on Saturday, Sep. 7 at 11 a.m.
